Bringing a pet home can be an exciting moment, but there are certain precautions you should take to ensure your home is ready to welcome a pet.

Keep reading to discover five tips that can help ensure your home is a safe and comfortable environment for your new furry friend:

1 – Cover Your Trash Cans

Pets are curious creatures that may rummage through your trash if they think they can find a tasty meal. Make sure to keep the trash can covered to prevent your pet from attempting to eat something that could harm them.
Additionally, some human foods are toxic to dogs and cats, and a hungry pet might be tempted to eat a food wrapper, which could cause intestinal obstruction, or stick their head in an empty food bag, causing breathing difficulties.

2 – Remove Toxic Plants

Both indoor and outdoor plants can be toxic to your pet. Before bringing your new furry friend home, make sure you know which plants can be in your home.
For example, lilies are extremely toxic to cats, so you should remove them from your home before your curious new friend tries to take a bite.

3 – Remove Choking Hazards

Just like a small child, curious pets may try to swallow a toy left out. Therefore, if you have children at home, make sure they put away all toys to avoid a dangerous situation.
Small toys can pose a choking hazard, but a puppy might be tempted to chew on a larger toy, making any toy a potential danger.

4 – Move Chemicals to Safe Areas

A curious pet may accidentally spill or chew on any chemical bottle left out. Make sure to lock away any hazardous materials out of reach.
Additionally, it might be a good idea to swap out your cleaning products for pet-safe and verified versions to ensure you don’t make your pet sick during the next cleaning day.

5 – Install Fences in the Yard

If you have an open yard at home, consider installing protective fences. Fences are a costly investment but worth it to ensure your pet’s safety. Your new pet will love having a safe place to play outdoors.
